Aviation Enthusiast

Aviation enthusiast is such a large hobby to cover, however there are particular areas where there is a great deal of interest for avid enthusiasts. Some people are "die hard" military aircraft followers, were as some are historical aircraft enthusiasts. The beauty of this hobby is the complete choice you have, and you can always change your mind and follow something different too.

There are quite a few websites that you can visit too. We will as always list a few at the end of this introduction for you. One of our favourites websites for aircraft spotting is Flightradar24.com.….This really is a great website for following passenger aircraft over the UK and Europe. The sight has a live flight mapping page which is in "real time". Aircraft are displayed on the flight map and you can click on any them. So when you click you get the details of that flight. So with one click you can find out where the aircraft took off, where it is going, what speed, altitude and the aircraft type and airline.....Great site.....

You can also visit air shows around the country too. The majority of air shows do have an entrance fee, which can vary from show to show, but on average the entrance fees are around £15 to £20. There are a number of shows which take prime spot throughout the air show world and the top ones have to be The Royal Air Tatoo, held at RAF Fairford and the Farnborough Air Show, held at Farnborough airfield in Hampshire. These show have a wide range of both civilian and military flying aircraft displays and some great static displays too. There are many stands and stalls for you to visit and for you to get to meet the crews of some of the aircraft displaying too. There is usually a beer tent which is great for the dads amongst you and plenty of burger and fish and chip stalls. It really is a great day out for all the family, try one out this summer and let us know how you get on and  send us some of your photographs so we can put them onto our “visitor’s hobbies gallery pages”…..

One aspect of being an aviation enthusiast is that of using an Air Band Radio Receiver. Here you can listen to the communications between aircraft and the control towers, radar and aircraft company frequencies. Although it is perfectly legal to buy and own a scanner, it is actually illegal to use it for listening to aircraft frequencies. More details can be found here.

As with all electronic devices the more you pay the more you get. You can have a radio receiver for as little as £15. For that price you will get a basic radio capable of receiving air band transmissions. The frequencies would be searched via the use of a dial. However if you spend a wee bit more £40 to £50 you can get the all singing all dancing type radios that have a digital display and can store a myriad of frequencies.

We have researched a few beginner air band radios and books to get you started and we have put the links for you to the right of here, please take a look, see what you think. Happy spotting…..

Here are some links for you were you can get some more detailed information. We have chosen these from a broad spectrum of sites, however should you think that we could include another link, then please email us and we will certainly consider including it..…
